What Does It Mean to Be Self-Resourced?: What I'm Learning About What I Already Have
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
Over the past few weeks, I've found myself worrying about money while preparing for the first collection from Tempered Earth, my new handmade adornment studio. But what started as a practical search for supplies turned into something illuminating.
As I began gathering old jewelry materials I'd collected over the years, I kept rediscovering things I thought I was missing. Earring backs. Findings. My kitchen scale. Beads I forgot I owned. And while opening organizers and taking inventory of what was already there, I realized I wasn't just rediscovering supplies, but I was also rediscovering myself.
This episode is a reflection on what it means to be self-resourced, and by self-resourced, I don't mean as someone who has everything they'll ever need, but as someone who pauses long enough to recognize all they already have within themselves.
If you've also been waiting until you have "enough" before taking your next step, I hope this episode can provide a fresh perspective.
Some reflections to take with you...
- What resources have you gathered through your experiences over the years?
- Where have you been overlooking evidence of your own growth or readiness because you've been focused on what's still missing?
- What would change if, before reaching for something outside yourself, you paused to take inventory of what already lives within you?
Thank you for spending this quiet moment with me. Let me know how you feel about this new episode flow.
Stevie

About this space
Soft Alchemy is the evolution of my earlier work, In Case Nobody Told You. While the name has changed, the heart remains the same: creating grounded, honest spaces for healing, reflection, and liberation—especially for sensitive, intuitive, and self-led beings navigating growth in a complicated world.
You're listening to Soft Alchemy, a bi-weekly altar space for transmutation and return. I'm Stevie Renee, and in this sacred container, you're invited to soften, to breathe, and to come home to your inner wisdom. On this podcast, we sit with the story shaping us, we honor what's tender, and how the everyday moments of our lives become embodied medicine. Every episode is an offering for who you're becoming. A place where what I'm learning in my own life becomes a path you can follow back to yourself. So take a breath, settle into your body, and welcome home. Welcome to Soft Alchemy. Over the past week or so, I have been preparing for the first collection from Tempered Earth, my new handmade adornment studio. And alongside all the excitement has been a very practical question. How do I actually get this shop open while my money is super tight? I needed to buy shipping supplies before I could launch. You know, nothing glamorous, just the things that would allow me to package and send each piece with some amount of attention, right? Jewelry boxes, display cards, mailers, packing tape. And I also kept coming back to the idea of buying a new bead organizer. It wasn't essential, but I just had this feeling that it would make designing easier because I'm such a visual person. And if I could finally see all of my tempered earth materials together in one place, I figured I'd be able to see what materials were naturally in conversation with one another. I wasn't sure that I could justify spending the money, though. So I spent almost two weeks telling myself, I'll just stay in ideation mode. And when finances get better, that's when I'll make moves. But then something unexpected happened. I ended up receiving a refund that covered what I needed almost exactly. It was one of those moments that reminds you that what you need has a way of arriving right on time. I used to always say, what's for you won't miss you. And this felt like one of those moments, you know, because life just has this way of creating just enough room for the next step, exactly when it's time to take it. So I placed the order. And instead of waiting for everything to arrive, I decided to start pulling together the materials I already had to see what felt like it belonged in this tempered earth universe, if you will. I opened old organizers and all these little containers that I hadn't looked through in years. And I ended up pulling out African brass beads and seed beads and stones and pendants and all these findings that so undeniably felt like tempered earth. My mom even gave me a mother of pearl necklace that she no longer wears. And I'm planning on deconstructing it so those pearls can become a part of future pieces. As I sorted through everything, I kept having this experience where I'd think I was missing something, only to realize that I already had it left over from my last jewelry business. So I'd think, oh my gosh, I still need earring backs. And then I'd find some. I remembered that I needed a particular type of earring wire that I usually buy wholesale, but couldn't afford to order right now because of the cost of opening an account with the supplier that I like to work with. But then I found a whole bunch of them tucked away in one of my beauty organizers. You know, I even found the kitchen scale that I used to weigh packages before shipping orders. So what was happening was I was realizing that I already owned many of the things I thought I was missing. I just hadn't taken inventory. On the surface, it was a practical win. I was saving money because I didn't have to buy duplicates. But underneath that, it made me think about how often we move through life focused on what we think we need next. Whether that's more confidence, more money, more experience, more certainty, more healing, more whatever. You know, we spend so much time looking at what's missing that we rarely stop to notice what we already have within us. The tools we've gathered along the way, the lessons we've learned, the wisdom that has carried us to this very moment, the strengths that we were naturally born with. Since 2023, so much of my own attention has naturally gone toward all the hardships I've faced, right? Grieving the loss of my grandfather, living with anxiety, slowly rebuilding trust in my nervous system, learning to navigate seasons where my world felt much smaller than it once did. But while all of that was happening, I was also growing. I deepened my meditation practice. I became an Ayurvedic health educator and a meditation guide and a well-being coach. I returned to therapy. I slowly expanded my world through exposure therapy. I kept writing. I found my way back to jewelry. I learned how to make space for grief instead of constantly trying to outrun it. So while looking at those organizers full of beads and findings, I realized they weren't the only things that I had been collecting. I'd also been collecting resilience. I'd been collecting wisdom. I'd been collecting practices, relationships, trust. I think this is what being self-resourced has come to mean for me, right? I don't think being self-resourced means believing we already have everything we'll ever need. Because we all need support, we all need community, we all need opportunities that come from outside of ourselves. And being self-resourced isn't about pretending that we don't, it's about remembering to take inventory of what we already have before assuming we're starting from nothing. So while I thought I was simply organizing supplies for a jewelry collection, I also ended up taking inventory of my life. And for the first time in a long time, I could see evidence that I've been preparing for this next chapter so much longer than I realized. And maybe that's why that moment moved me so much. It wasn't just the materials that had finally come together. It felt like parts of my own life were coming together too. My new organizer actually arrives today at the time I'm recording this. And man, I'm genuinely so excited to move everything into its new home. I am going to begin styling the materials themselves for a little photo shoot, you know, the brass, the stones, the beads, the shell. And it's going to be the first glimpse into offering number one. And I don't know, it feels like so much more than just organizing supplies. It really feels like I am slowly building the world that Tempered Earth has been asking me to create in these past few weeks. You know, it's not just that I'm making jewelry. And it's not just that I'm returning to something that I've loved since I was a little girl, although that's part of it. But it really feels like all of these different parts of me that have existed for years, my writing, my meditation practice, Ayurveda, storytelling, my love of beauty and ritual and creating with my hands, these things are no longer living in separate rooms. They're finally beginning to speak the same language. So tempered earth doesn't feel like a departure from my work. It feels like another expression of it. Before I leave you today, I want to offer you a question that's been sitting with me ever since all of this happened. What have you been gathering along your own journey? Maybe it's courage. Maybe it's wisdom. Maybe it's a relationship that's helped carry you through. Maybe it's a practice that's become an anchor. Maybe it's simply evidence that you have survived things that you once couldn't imagine surviving. And the next time you find yourself reaching for something outside of yourself, pause before asking what you still need. Take inventory. Look around. Or better yet, look within. Because you may discover that you've been preparing for this season of your life much longer than you realized. Until next time, take good care.
